Our speaker will be retired USAF Lt. Colonel Craig O’Mara, who was the chief pilot for the SOFIA Airborne Observatory. SOFIA stood for Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. The airborne platform was a modified Boeing 747 jumbo jet equipped with a 8.9 foot mirror for studying the heavens in infrared wavelengths at high altitude. It flew as high as 41,000 ft. Craig will describe the missions and show images made from the telescope.
