For those of you visiting Pioneertown Preserve for the first time, please remember to dress warmly, as the desert nights can be quite cool. Be sure to bring plenty of drinks and snacks for yourself.
Star Party Etiquette:
As with all star parties, please observe standard star party etiquette. Some tips: try to arrive and set up before dark; use no white light – use red filtered flashlights wherever possible – minimize white light from the auto door and dome lights; if you arrive late or plan to leave early, take care to approach and park so your headlights or backup lights do not shine on other participants; if you leave early or must use white light, first give a warning so observers or astrophotographers can compensate; please ask before handling other participant’s telescope equipment. Most importantly, be prepared to relax and enjoy good company under the night sky.

My name is Craig Hadley, I live in Redlands, I’m new to astronomy, and I’d love to attend (with a few of my family members). I recently purchased a telescope. Is there anything I need to know or bring to join you all on this date?
Hello Craig. You and your family are welcome to join us at the star party; they are open to anyone. We arrive and setup around dusk. We’ll probably stay until 10pm or so. The last stretch of road is a dirt road but it’s maintained well. The following weekend we’ll be at Whitewater which is a little closer if that matters.

Craig. The latest forecast is predicting clouds and rain for Saturday evening. We wouldn’t suggest going to this event and we will probably officially cancel it. Sorry. We have the Whitewater outreach the following weekend.
